Sultan Mehmed II dispatched Ballaban Pasha, the newly appointed Ottoman sanjakbey of the Sanjak of Ohrid and a commander of Albanian origin, to press Ottoman military campaigns against Albanian resistance led by Skanderbeg in the western Balkans.
In April 1465, Albanian forces under Skanderbeg engaged an Ottoman army commanded by Ballaban Pasha near Vajkal. Both sides sustained heavy losses during the fighting, but the Albanians ultimately repelled the Ottoman force and secured the field.
Although Albania claimed victory, the battle's heavy casualties weakened both forces. Fleeing Ottoman troops captured several of Skanderbeg's officers and summarily executed them, underscoring the brutal character of the ongoing Albanian-Ottoman conflict.
