Sun Quan sought to expand his territorial control by seizing Jiangxia Commandery, a strategically positioned region held by the rival warlord Liu Biao and defended by his general Huang Zu. The ambition to dominate the middle Yangtze region drove Sun Quan to launch a military campaign against the commandery.
Sun Quan's forces attacked Jiangxia Commandery in 203 CE during the late Eastern Han dynasty. Despite Huang Zu retreating, Sun Quan's army was unable to fully capture or hold the commandery, rendering the engagement inconclusive for both sides.
Sun Quan failed to secure Jiangxia in this campaign, but the contest over the region continued. Five years later, in the Battle of Jiangxia, Sun Quan launched another assault that ultimately ended in his decisive victory over Huang Zu, completing the conquest he had attempted here.
