A succession dispute in the principality of Idar pitted two princes, Bhar Mal and Rai Mal, against each other. Bhar Mal secured backing from the Gujarat Sultanate under Muzaffar Shah II, while the displaced Rai Mal sought support from Rana Sanga of the Rajputs. Rana Sanga's motivation was both to restore Rai Mal to his throne and to curb the expanding influence of the Gujarat Sultanate in the region.
Three major battles were fought within the principality of Idar between the forces of Bhar Mal, supported by the Gujarat Sultanate, and Rai Mal, backed by Rana Sanga's Rajput forces. The conflict represented a broader power struggle between Rajput confederacy interests and the expansionist ambitions of the Gujarat Sultanate in early sixteenth-century northwestern India.
By 1517, Rai Mal and Rana Sanga's combined forces successfully defeated Muzaffar Shah II, allowing Rai Mal to reclaim his kingdom. The outcome restored Rajput influence over Idar and dealt a setback to the Gujarat Sultanate's attempt to extend its control into the principality.
