During the Napoleonic Wars, French privateers operated in the Caribbean to harass British shipping. The Jeune Richard, a French privateer with a larger crew than the British packet ship Windsor Castle, encountered and attacked the vessel, initiating a naval engagement on 1 October 1807.
The Windsor Castle, commanded by Acting Captain William Rogers, repelled repeated attacks from the Jeune Richard. Rather than simply defending, Rogers pressed the engagement, boarded the privateer, overpowered her larger crew, forced them below decks, and claimed the vessel as a prize.
The victory was widely reported in contemporary newspapers and journals. Rogers and his crew were celebrated as heroes and lavishly rewarded for their courage, the action standing as a notable example of a smaller British vessel overcoming a superior opponent in the Caribbean theater.
