Cycling had been a male-only Olympic sport through decades of IOC programming decisions, with women's events consistently excluded from the schedule up to and including the 1980 Moscow Games.
Six cycling events—four track and two road—were held at Moscow's Krylatskoye velodrome and the Olympic Cycling Circuit. The 100 km team time trial ran along the Moscow-Minsk highway, while the individual road race covered 189 kilometres over 14 laps of the Olympic circuit.
The 1980 Games marked the final Olympic program without women's cycling, as the IOC introduced women's road and track events at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, broadening participation in the sport at the highest competitive level.
