During production of the underwater documentary Ocean's Deadliest at Batt Reef, a break in filming caused by bad weather led Irwin to snorkel in shallow waters. He entered the water intending to gather footage for his daughter Bindi's television programme, Bindi the Jungle Girl, when he encountered a short-tail stingray.
On 4 September 2006, a short-tail stingray struck Steve Irwin with its barb, piercing his chest and penetrating both his thoracic wall and heart. The resulting massive trauma killed the 44-year-old Australian wildlife conservationist and television personality at Batt Reef in Queensland's Great Barrier Reef region.
Irwin's death became one of the very few documented human fatalities caused by stingrays and is believed to be the only such death captured on video, though the footage has never been released publicly. The documentary Ocean's Deadliest was completed using footage filmed in subsequent weeks and broadcast on Discovery Channel roughly four months later, concluding with a tribute to Irwin.
