Australia enforced a strict six-month pre-shipment quarantine on horses, and in 1953 federal authorities confirmed they would not waive these regulations for the Olympic Games. This made it impossible to hold equestrian competitions in Melbourne alongside the other Olympic events.
The IOC selected Stockholm, Sweden, as the alternate venue in 1954. The equestrian competitions took place from 11 to 17 June 1956 at Stockholm Olympic Stadium, featuring 158 competitors from 29 nations across dressage, eventing, and show jumping in both individual and team formats.
The 1956 Games became the only Summer Olympics in history to have events split across two continents, with equestrian held in Europe in June and all other sports contested in Melbourne, Australia, in November. Australia, Cambodia, and Venezuela made their first appearances in Olympic equestrian competition.
