FIBA Europe organized its 33rd continental championship in Sweden, selecting five host cities—Borås, Luleå, Norrköping, Södertälje, and Stockholm—to stage the tournament. The event also carried added stakes as the top three finishers would earn berths to the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics.
Sixteen national teams competed across Sweden from 5 to 14 September 2003. Lithuania defeated Spain 93–84 in the final, claiming the country's third FIBA European Championship title. Šarūnas Jasikevičius was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player for his performance throughout the competition.
Lithuania secured its third European basketball title and, along with the other top-two finishers, qualified for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. The result reinforced Lithuania's status as one of Europe's leading basketball nations in the post-Soviet era.
