Pakistan, a dominant force in Olympic field hockey, faced defeat against West Germany in the gold-medal match. Tensions escalated during the final ten minutes as Pakistani fans invaded the pitch and players and officials repeatedly confronted the umpires, requiring play to be halted twice.
West Germany defeated Pakistan in the gold-medal match of the 1972 Munich Olympics field hockey tournament, marking the first European title since 1920. Pakistani fans and officials stormed the pitch at full time, assaulting security personnel, dousing the International Hockey Federation president with water, and Pakistani players destroyed their locker room and refused to wear their silver medals at the ceremony.
Eleven Pakistani players received life bans from their national team. Following a high-level apology, the bans were reduced to two years, and eight of the players went on to compete at the 1976 Summer Olympics.
