James Scott Newman, a 14-year-old student at Pine Middle School in Reno, Nevada, brought a .38-caliber revolver belonging to his parents to school on March 14, 2006, and used it to shoot two of his eighth-grade classmates.
Newman shot and injured two 14-year-old classmates on school grounds. Athletics teacher Jencie Fagan intervened and confronted the shooter, helping to end the incident. Newman was subsequently arrested and initially charged as an adult with attempted murder, use of a deadly weapon, and use of a firearm by a minor.
Newman pleaded guilty to two counts of battery with a deadly weapon and was sentenced as a juvenile to house arrest until completing 200 hours of community service. Teacher Jencie Fagan was awarded the Above & Beyond Citizen Honor from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society in Washington, D.C. in March 2008.
