Cause → Event → Consequence
After being delayed nearly four weeks at the siege of Güns, the Ottoman forces under Suleiman the Magnificent abandoned their plan to besiege Vienna and began marching southward through the Duchy of Styria, encountering the fortified town of Maribor along their route.
During September 1532, a local garrison and citizens of Maribor, then called Marburg, defended the fortified town against the vastly superior Ottoman army led by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and his Grand Vizier Pargalı Ibrahim Pasha, resisting the overwhelming invading force.
The defense of Maribor was part of a broader series of delays and setbacks that ultimately prevented the Ottomans from advancing further into Central Europe, reinforcing the effective boundary of Ottoman westward penetration into the Holy Roman Empire.
