Abu Sa'id Mirza left Herat to suppress the Balkh revolt by Juki Mirza and counter an Uzbek incursion into Transoxiana. This drew his forces away from western territories, leaving his son Sultan Mahmud Mirza as governor of Jurjan. Sultan Husayn Mirza Bayqarah seized on Abu Sa'id's absence to reassert his claim over the region he had briefly held in 1458.
In May 1461, Sultan Husayn Mirza Bayqarah attacked Jurjan and defeated the Timurid governor Sultan Mahmud Mirza at the Battle of Jauzi Wali. Sultan Husayn then appointed Abdal-Rahman Arghun as governor of the territory and proceeded to besiege Herat itself from August to October 1461, threatening Abu Sa'id Mirza's capital.
News of the defeat forced Abu Sa'id Mirza to conclude a hasty truce with Juki Mirza and march back toward Herat. Sultan Husayn lifted the siege before Abu Sa'id arrived, and Abu Sa'id subsequently drove him out and seized Jurjan and Mazandaran. With his western frontier stabilized, Abu Sa'id then completed the siege and capture of Shahrukhiya, finally subduing Juki Mirza by 1464.
