Cause

The 1932 Winter Olympics organizing committee in Lake Placid chose to adopt pack-style racing for speed skating, departing from the traditional time-trial format used in previous Olympic Games. The IOC also permitted women to participate in speed skating for the first time, though only as demonstration events rather than full medal competitions.

Event

Four men's speed skating medal events were held between February 4 and 8, 1932, with all competitors racing simultaneously in a pack format unique in Olympic history. Women contested demonstration events over 500 m, 1000 m, and 1500 m distances from February 8 to 10, marking the first time women competed in Olympic speed skating.

Consequence

The pack-style format used at the 1932 Games was not retained for subsequent Olympic speed skating, but it prefigured short track speed skating, which debuted as a demonstration event at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics and became an official medal sport at the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics. Women's speed skating eventually gained full Olympic medal status in later Games.
