Tennis was included as one of 28 sports on the programme of the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics. The NSW Tennis Centre was designated as the competition venue, and players from around the world qualified to compete in a single-elimination format across four events.
From 19 to 28 September 2000, men's and women's singles (64-player draws, six rounds) and doubles (32-pair draws, five rounds) were contested. Venus Williams won the women's singles and, partnering Serena Williams, the women's doubles. Yevgeny Kafelnikov took the men's singles, and the Canadian pair Sébastien Lareau and Daniel Nestor won the men's doubles.
The United States topped the tennis medal table with two gold medals, both captured by Venus Williams. Russia and Canada each claimed one gold medal. Venus Williams's double gold reinforced her status as the dominant player of the era entering the early 2000s.
