Cause

Police Captain Sergey Semidovskiy, intoxicated, became involved in an argument with several customers at a bar in Yaroslavsky, Primorsky Krai, Russia. The dispute escalated, prompting him to open fire on those present and outside the establishment.

Event

On 25 August 2002, Semidovskiy used a Vepr carbine to shoot five people dead and wound ten others in and around the bar. After the attack, he shot himself in the chest and was transported to a hospital in Khorol, where he attempted suicide again and ultimately died of cardiac arrest on 27 August.

Consequence

Following the shooting, Colonel Lebedev, head of the Khorolsky District department of internal affairs, along with Lieutenant-Colonel Kurgeyev and Lieutenant-Colonel Kotyshev, were dismissed from their positions. Additional disciplinary measures were applied to other members of the local police force.
