Biography

Alexander Chuka Iwobi was born on 3 May 1996 in Lagos, Nigeria. He grew up in England and attended Campion School in Hornchurch, Essex. Being the nephew of Jay-Jay Okocha, a well-known African footballer, Iwobi was surrounded by football from an early age. He joined Arsenal's academy as a child and spent more than ten years developing through the club's youth system before making it to the first team.

Iwobi made his senior debut for Arsenal in 2015 and quickly became known as a versatile and energetic midfielder, capable of playing across the front line. During his time at the club, he won the FA Cup in 2017, reached the EFL Cup final in 2018, and played in the UEFA Europa League final in 2019, where Arsenal lost. His performances at Arsenal gained significant attention and showed his ability to compete at the top level of English football.

In August 2019, Iwobi moved to Everton in a deal reportedly worth up to £35 million, making him one of the more expensive Nigerian players in Premier League history at that time. He spent four seasons at Goodison Park, where he became a key figure in the midfield and helped the club during their Premier League survival battles. In 2023, he transferred to Fulham, where he continued to play at Premier League level.

Internationally, Iwobi represented England at youth levels up to under-18 before choosing to play for Nigeria. He made his senior debut for the Super Eagles in October 2015 and played in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. He also appeared in several Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, including the 2019 event where Nigeria finished third, the 2021 and 2023 editions — finishing as runners-up in 2023 — and the 2025 tournament, where Nigeria again finished third.

Outside of football, Iwobi has a passion for music and records as a rapper under the stage name '17', which references his squad number. This interest highlights his personality beyond sports and follows a broader trend of modern athletes developing public identities in different areas.

Before Fame

Alex Iwobi was born in Lagos but moved to England when he was young, growing up in a family with a strong football background. His uncle, Augustine Jay-Jay Okocha, was a star for Nigeria, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bolton Wanderers. This connection to top-level football gave Iwobi an early insight into the sport's demands and possibilities. He went to Campion School in Hornchurch, where he balanced school with developing his football skills.

Iwobi joined Arsenal's academy at eight years old and spent more than ten years moving up through the youth levels. His growth happened during a time when Arsenal was focusing heavily on developing homegrown and young talent under Arsène Wenger, and Iwobi learned the technical and tactical style that was key to the club's academy. By his late teens, he was regularly training with the first team and gaining recognition as one of the promising young players in the club.
