Biography

Anna Helene Paquin was born on July 24, 1982, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. She grew up in Wellington, New Zealand, after her family moved there when she was a child. She went to Raphael House Rudolf Steiner School and Hutt Intermediate School in New Zealand, then later studied at Windward School in Los Angeles, before attending Columbia University in the United States. Her move from a New Zealand upbringing to an international acting career began when she was very young, landing a role in Jane Campion's The Piano (1993), which marked the start of her professional journey.

Paquin won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1994 for her role in The Piano, becoming the second-youngest Oscar winner at the age of 11. Her role as Flora, the daughter of a mute pianist played by Holly Hunter, gained her significant attention and established her as a talented actress. After this, she built a solid career as a child actress, appearing in films like Fly Away Home (1996), Jane Eyre (1996), Steven Spielberg's Amistad (1997), The Member of the Wedding (1997), A Walk on the Moon (1999), and Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous (2000).

As she took on adult roles, Paquin played Rogue in Bryan Singer's X-Men series, starting with the first film in 2000 and continuing until 2006, with a brief return in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014). During this time, she also appeared in 25th Hour (2002), Spike Lee's film adaptation of a Dennis Lehane novel, as well as the horror film Trick 'r Treat (2007) and Kenneth Lonergan's drama Margaret (2011). She voiced a character in the Pixar animated movie The Good Dinosaur (2015) and appeared in Martin Scorsese's film The Irishman (2019).

Paquin gained renewed fame on television in her lead role as Sookie Stackhouse in HBO's vampire drama series True Blood from 2008 to 2014. This role won her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Series Drama in 2009, and she received more nominations from the Primetime Emmy Awards and the Golden Globes for TV films like Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee (2007) and The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler (2009). In 2002, she also won a Theatre World Award, showing her involvement in stage performance as well as on screen. In 2017, she was honored with a star on Canada's Walk of Fame for her contributions to the arts. Paquin married her True Blood co-star Stephen Moyer in 2010, and they have continued to work together on several projects.

Before Fame

Anna Paquin grew up in Wellington, New Zealand, and went to Raphael House Rudolf Steiner School and Hutt Intermediate School. She had never acted professionally when she auditioned for Jane Campion's film, The Piano, among thousands of other kids. Her natural performance immediately caught Campion's eye during an open casting call for the role of Flora.

In the early 1990s, New Zealand and Australian films were gaining attention worldwide, with directors like Campion becoming well-known. Paquin started her career just as this trend was expanding, becoming part of a film that won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 1993 and received several Academy Awards. Her Oscar win at age 11 put her in the spotlight before she had any formal training or previous acting roles.
