Biography

Antipater I of Macedon was part of the Antipatrid dynasty, linked to the Argeads. Born around 309 BC, he was the son of Cassander, king of Macedon, and Thessalonike, Alexander the Great's half-sister. This made Antipater a key figure in Macedonian royal politics during the chaotic times after Alexander's death, when his former generals and their descendants fought for control over the divided empire. From his father, Antipater inherited a claim to the Macedonian throne, and his maternal heritage connected him to Philip II, making him one of the last direct descendants of the Argead line.

When Cassander died in 297 BC, Antipater and his brother Alexander V jointly took over the Macedonian kingdom. This setup was unstable from the start. The brothers clashed over control, and their conflict quickly turned violent. In a shocking move, Antipater killed his mother Thessalonike because she supposedly favored Alexander. This act alienated many among the Macedonian nobility and the people, severely damaging Antipater's political position when he most needed widespread support.

Facing his brother's hostility and the loss of his mother, Alexander V sought help from outside Macedonia. He turned to Pyrrhus of Epirus and Demetrius I Poliorcetes, both eager to expand their influence. Alexander traded territories for their support. Ultimately, Demetrius proved more significant, bringing his forces into Macedonia. Instead of restoring Alexander to power, Demetrius had him killed and took the Macedonian throne for himself around 294 BC, ending the brothers' rule and removing them from the political scene.

After being ousted by Demetrius, Antipater fled to Thrace, where Lysimachus ruled. Despite being Antipater's father-in-law through his daughter Eurydice, Lysimachus chose not to show mercy. In the cutthroat world of Hellenistic politics, he had Antipater killed to eliminate any potential threat. Antipater's death around 286 BC marked the end of his short and tumultuous career.

Antipater's wife Eurydice was his paternal first cousin, the daughter of Lysimachus, highlighting the harsh realities of succession politics in the Hellenistic world after Alexander. Alongside his brother Alexander V, Antipater was among the last Macedonian kings descending from Perdiccas I, the ancient founder of the Macedonian royal line, marking the end of a dynastic era.

Before Fame

Antipater was born into Macedonia's ruling family while his father, Cassander, was consolidating control over the kingdom after Alexander the Great's death in 323 BC. Growing up in the Macedonian court, he learned about the traditions of Macedonian kingship and warfare, amid the ongoing conflicts among the Diadochi, the generals who were dividing Alexander's empire. His mother Thessalonike's link to Philip II gave the family an extra claim to legitimacy that Cassander actively promoted.

Antipater's early life was marked by constant warfare and changing alliances, as Alexander's unified empire broke into competing Hellenistic kingdoms. As the son of the Macedonian king, Antipater was prepared for a role in governance and military leadership, although specific details of his early education aren't recorded in surviving ancient sources. He didn't come to power through conquest or military prowess, but inherited the kingdom when Cassander died in 297 BC, leaving it to his sons.
