Axel Sparre was born on January 9, 1652, in Visby parish and died on May 31, 1728. He was a Swedish count who had careers as both a soldier and a visual artist, earning recognition in military service and the decorative arts. He lived through a very eventful time in Swedish history, witnessing both the peak of Swedish imperial power and its fall after the Great Northern War. Sparre came from one of the top noble families in Sweden, which gave him social status and access to the culture of his time.
