Biography
Göran Bror Benny Andersson, born December 16, 1946, in Stockholm, Sweden, is a Swedish musician, composer, and producer with a career spanning over five decades. He became internationally famous as a member of the pop group ABBA, one of history's most successful musical acts. Alongside Björn Ulvaeus, Andersson created ABBA's unique sound by blending folk melodies with pop arrangements and harmonies.
Andersson started his music career in his youth with various bands before joining the Hep Stars in the 1960s, a group often called Sweden's answer to the Beatles. His partnership with Ulvaeus led to the creation of ABBA in the early 1970s, along with vocalists Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, whom Andersson later married. The group had their breakthrough with a victory at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 with "Waterloo," which catapulted them to worldwide fame with hits like "Dancing Queen," "Mamma Mia," and "Fernando."
After ABBA took a break in 1982, Andersson expanded into musical theater. He worked with Ulvaeus and lyricist Tim Rice on the musical Chess in 1984, which included the hit single "One Night in Bangkok." His later theater projects include Kristina från Duvemåla, based on Vilhelm Moberg's novels about Swedish emigrants to America, and the hit Mamma Mia!, which turned ABBA's songs into a beloved stage musical and successful film series.
Since 2001, Andersson has led Benny Anderssons orkester, exploring Swedish folk music and traditional melodies. He has received many honors including honorary doctorates, the title of Professor, and recognition as International Swede of the Year. His contributions to music have been recognized with awards such as the Musikexportpriset in both 2000 and 2008, and most recently, he was named Commander 1st class of the Order of Vasa in 2024, solidifying his status as one of Sweden's most cherished cultural figures.
Before Fame
Andersson started learning accordion and piano as a child in Stockholm. He kicked off his professional career in the early 1960s by joining several local bands. In 1964, he became a member of the Hep Stars, a group that found significant success in Scandinavia and was nicknamed "Sweden's Beatles." This gave Andersson his first experience with commercial success and recording.
In the late 1960s, Andersson met Björn Ulvaeus through their bands' musical circles. Their songwriting partnership grew over time, with their early work showing influences from the folk-rock style popular at the time. This collaboration set the stage for ABBA's signature sound, combining Andersson's knack for melodies with modern pop production techniques that would shape the music of the 1970s.
