Biography
Beyoncé Giselle Knowles, born on September 4, 1981, in Houston, Texas, became one of the most successful and acclaimed entertainers in popular music history. Starting out with the R&B group Destiny's Child in the late 1990s, she and fellow members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams received numerous awards before she launched a solo career that outshined nearly all her peers in scope and cultural influence. Her work includes music, film, television, modeling, and philanthropy, making her one of the most versatile public figures of the early twenty-first century.
Before Fame
Growing up in Houston, Beyoncé went to the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts before transferring to Alief Elsik High School. Both played a significant role in developing her skills as a performer. From an early age, she took part in talent shows and studied singing and dance. Her father, Mathew Knowles, eventually became her manager as she and a group of young performers worked toward getting a record deal in the mid-1990s. The group that would become Destiny's Child signed with Columbia Records in 1997. They released music just as R&B and hip-hop were changing mainstream American pop culture, giving the young Beyoncé a unique platform that few performers her age had so quickly accessed.
