Biography
Dutugamunu, known in Sinhala as දුටුගැමුණු and also called Duṭṭhagāmaṇī Abhaya, was the king of the Anuradhapura Kingdom from 161 BC to 137 BC. Born in Hambantota, he is one of Sri Lanka's most celebrated monarchs for his military victories and architectural accomplishments. During his reign, he was the first to unify the entire island under one ruler, making him a key figure in Sinhalese history.
The highlight of Dutugamunu's rule was his campaign against Elara, a Tamil king from the Chola Kingdom who had invaded and taken over the Anuradhapura kingdom since 205 BC. This conflict, which went on for several years, ended with Dutugamunu defeating Elara and ending foreign domination of the island. The war involved many battles across various areas of Sri Lanka, with Dutugamunu successfully capturing fortified positions until he reached Anuradhapura, the capital.
Beyond his military successes, Dutugamunu turned Anuradhapura into a splendid center of power and culture. He embarked on large construction projects, renovating existing buildings and creating new ones that exhibited the wealth and advancement of his kingdom. These architectural efforts not only enhanced the city's beauty but also showcased royal power across the island.
Dutugamunu's story holds a special place in Sri Lankan history, mixing historical facts with myths that have evolved over centuries. While many parts of his life have been exaggerated in later stories and folklore, contemporary inscriptions and archaeological findings support the main story of his victories and building projects. He died in Anuradhapura in 137 BC, ending a reign that deeply influenced the political and cultural direction of ancient Sri Lanka.
Before Fame
Dutugamunu was born into the royal family of the southern Ruhuna kingdom when Sri Lanka was politically divided and partly occupied by foreign powers. The Tamil king Elara had ruled the northern Anuradhapura kingdom for several decades, causing traditional Sinhalese royal centers to be displaced and weakened.
During Dutugamunu's youth, there were movements resisting foreign control and attempts to restore local authority. Growing up in Hambantota, away from occupied areas, gave him a strong base to begin his campaign to reclaim and unify the island.
