Biography
Elof Kristofer Tegnér was born on 30 June 1844 in Sweden, into a well-known intellectual family. He was the grandson of the famous poet and bishop Esaias Tegnér the Elder, whose epic Frithiofs saga helped put Swedish literature on the global map. His brother, Esaias Tegnér the Younger, was a noted philologist and historian. This family background influenced Elof's own path in life, steering him toward scholarly and literary pursuits. He studied at Lund University, an institution where he would later spend much of his career.
After completing his studies, Tegnér focused on historical scholarship and library science. He became a librarian at the Lund University Library, a role that matched his detail-oriented nature and love for historical documents. Here, he managed one of Sweden's key academic collections, ensuring that important materials were preserved and accessible for scholars. His role was not just administrative; he actively engaged in research and writing.
As a historian and author, Tegnér used his access to primary sources and his family's cultural connections to write about Swedish history, literature, and biography. He also contributed to understanding the Tegnér family legacy. His peers respected him for his knowledgeable and well-documented work in Swedish historical studies.
Tegnér was married to Hedvig Tegnér, and they moved in the intellectual circles around Lund. He passed away on 26 February 1900 in the Lund Cathedral parish, having dedicated most of his life to scholarship and the university community. His career spanned from the romanticism of his grandfather's time to the more academic focus of the late 19th century.
