Biography
Sir Elton Hercules John, born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on 25 March 1947 in Pinner, England, is one of the most successful recording artists ever. His songwriting partnership with Bernie Taupin, started in the late 1960s, has created some of the most lasting popular songs. John showed remarkable musical talent from a young age, learning piano early and earning a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music at the University of London. His formal music education laid the groundwork for a career spanning over five decades that changed popular music.
After studying at St. Thomas Aquinas High School and the Royal Academy, John began his professional career in the 1960s with the blues band Bluesology. He worked as a session musician and songwriter before releasing his debut album Empty Sky in 1969. The 1970s saw his rapid climb to global fame with albums like Honky Château, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, and Rock of the Westies. Hits from this time, including 'Your Song,' 'Tiny Dancer,' 'Rocket Man,' and 'Crocodile Rock,' cemented his role in popular music. His extravagant stage shows, with elaborate costumes and theatrical presentations, became as famous as his music.
Besides recording and performing, John has made important contributions to musical theatre and film. He wrote music for Disney's The Lion King in 1994, the Broadway musical Aida in 2000, and Billy Elliot the Musical in 2005. These works showed his versatility as a composer and his knack for adapting his music to different formats and audiences. John achieved EGOT status, becoming the 19th person to win Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards. His final tour, Farewell Yellow Brick Road, held from 2018 to 2023, became the highest-earning concert tour ever at the time.
John's personal life has had its ups and downs. He was married to sound engineer Renate Blauel from 1984 to 1988 and later partnered with filmmaker David Furnish in 2005, before marrying him in 2014. His battles with substance abuse in the 1970s and 1980s are well-known, but his recovery led to more involvement in charitable work, especially HIV/AIDS advocacy. In 1992, he founded the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which has raised over £300 million for AIDS research and prevention programs globally. His annual AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Party is one of Hollywood's biggest charitable events. John's honors include being named an Officer of Arts and Letters, Commander of the Order of British Empire in 1995, and Companion of Honour in 2020. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and has received many other awards including the Grammy Legend Award, Kennedy Center Honors, and the Johnny Mercer Award.
Before Fame
Reginald Dwight showed musical talent from a young age, starting piano lessons at four. His skills got noticed, leading to a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music, where he studied part-time while finishing his studies at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. As a teenager, he performed in local pubs and formed his first serious band, Bluesology, in 1962. The band played as a backing group for American soul and R&B musicians, giving Dwight exposure to different musical styles and professional experience.
The change from Reginald Dwight to Elton John happened in 1967 when he legally changed his name, picking parts from Bluesology bandmates Elton Dean and Long John Baldry. His collaboration with Bernie Taupin also started in 1967 after they both answered an ad from Liberty Records looking for new songwriters. Their way of working together, with Taupin writing lyrics and John creating melodies, was instantly successful and continued almost the same way throughout their careers.
