Biography
Erna Solberg was born on February 24, 1961, in Bergen, Norway. She attended Langhaugen videregående skole and later studied at the University of Bergen, focusing on social sciences, which helped shape her political career. She is married to Sindre Finnes and has been a key figure in Norwegian politics for many years as part of the Conservative Party.
Solberg was first elected to Norway's national parliament, the Storting, in 1989, starting a long legislative career. She gained important executive experience when she served as Minister of Local Government and Regional Development from 2001 to 2005 in Bondevik's Second Cabinet. During this time, she tightened immigration policies and worked on reforms to Norway's administrative divisions, earning a reputation as a firm and practical administrator. She became leader of the Conservative Party in 2004.
After the 2013 parliamentary election, Solberg became Norway's second female prime minister, following Gro Harlem Brundtland. She led a minority coalition government with the Conservative and Progress parties, known as the Blue-Blue Cabinet, with outside support from the Liberal and Christian Democratic parties. Her government was re-elected in 2017 and later included the Liberal Party in 2018 and the Christian Democratic Party in 2019, achieving a parliamentary majority. In 2018, she became the longest-serving Conservative prime minister in Norway's history.
When the 2021 parliamentary election resulted in the loss of the majority, Solberg resigned as prime minister and became the Leader of the Opposition, holding this role from 2021 to 2025. Under her leadership, the Conservative Party aimed to regain its electoral strength but lost in the 2025 general election. After this defeat, Solberg announced she would step down as party leader in 2026, ending more than 20 years as head of the Conservative Party.
Throughout her career, Solberg was recognized with several notable awards for her public service and work in international affairs. She was named Commander of the Order of St. Olav in 2005, received the Bridgebuilder Prize in 2012, was awarded King Harald V's Jubilee Medal in 2016, and received the Global Citizen Award in 2018. Her time as prime minister was marked by a focus on the social and ideological roots of Conservative policies, along with a practical approach to managing coalitions.
Before Fame
Erna Solberg grew up in Bergen, a major coastal city in western Norway, during a time of big social and economic changes in the country. She went to Langhaugen videregående skole before attending the University of Bergen, where she got involved with the academic and political trends of the late 1970s and 1980s. At that time, Norway was starting to benefit from North Sea oil revenues, and there were major discussions about governance, welfare policy, and the role of the state.
She began her political career with the Conservative Party and was first elected to the Storting in 1989 at 28 years old. Her early involvement in national politics came during a period of significant changes in Europe, like the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reorganization of European alliances, which influenced her views on governance, international cooperation, and the role of center-right politics in a Nordic welfare state.
