Biography

Geoffrey Roy Rush was born on July 6, 1951, in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia. He went to Everton Park State High School and the University of Queensland before focusing on theater training at L'École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris from 1975 to 1977. Rush started his professional acting career with the Queensland Theatre Company in 1971, becoming a strong stage performer before gaining international fame in film and TV.

Rush gained major attention with his film role as pianist David Helfgott in Shine (1996), which won him the Academy Award for Best Actor. This role put him on the international map and led to further Oscar nominations for his roles in Shakespeare in Love (1998), Quills (2000), and The King's Speech (2010). His film career includes both serious and blockbuster movies, with his well-known role as Captain Hector Barbossa in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, and notable roles in films like Elizabeth (1998), Les Misérables (1998), Finding Nemo (2003), Munich (2005), and The Book Thief (2013).

In theater, Rush has starred in international productions of classical and modern works like Waiting for Godot, The Winter's Tale, and The Importance of Being Earnest. He made his Broadway debut with Exit the King in 2009, winning the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play and the Theatre World Award. His later Broadway role in Diary of a Madman earned him a Drama Desk Award nomination in 2011. Rush's TV work has been similarly recognized, winning a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie for playing Peter Sellers in The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (2004).

Having won an Oscar, Emmy, and Tony, Rush is the only Australian actor to achieve this Triple Crown of Acting. He has also received many other awards such as two BAFTA Awards, the Centenary Medal (2001), and was made a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2014. Rush was named Australian of the Year in 2012 and was the founding president of the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts. He is married to actress Jane Menelaus and remains active in stage and screen acting.

Before Fame

Geoffrey Rush grew up in Queensland in the 1950s and 1960s when Australian theater was growing and evolving. After finishing high school at Everton Park State High, he went to the University of Queensland and began his acting career with the Queensland Theatre Company in 1971. His dedication led him to study in Paris at L'École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq, where actors learn about physical theater and movement.

In the 1970s, Australia saw a cultural revival, with more government support for the arts and a comeback in Australian cinema. During this time, Rush focused on theater, working with various Australian theater companies and earning a reputation as a versatile actor. By concentrating on stage roles early in his career rather than immediately seeking commercial success, he developed the unique acting style that later made him internationally famous.
