Biography

Lee Ji-eun, better known as IU, is a South Korean singer-songwriter and actress born on May 16, 1993, in Songjeong-dong. She joined LOEN Entertainment (now Kakao Entertainment) as a trainee in 2007 and debuted at fifteen with the EP Lost and Found in 2008. Her early releases got some attention, but it was the 2010 single "Good Day" from her EP Real that made her a national star. The song topped South Korea's Gaon Digital Chart for five weeks and was later named by Billboard as the top K-pop song of the 2010s.

IU's music began to change with her 2011 releases Real+ and Last Fantasy, which not only topped the Korean charts but also helped her become known as Korea's "little sister" with a "girl next door" image. As she grew, her music style shifted from typical K-pop to different musical genres. She took more creative control as a lyricist and producer, keeping her chart success while developing a more refined artistic style. Her 2020 collaboration "Eight" with Suga became her first number-one hit on Billboard's World Digital Song Sales chart, showing her international appeal.

Aside from music, IU has made a name for herself in acting, starting with a supporting role in the popular series Dream High in 2011. Her roles in My Mister (2018) and the upcoming When Life Gives You Tangerines (2025) have been praised by critics, with the former earning her a Best Actress nomination at the 55th Baeksang Arts Awards, marking her shift from pop star to acclaimed actress.

Throughout her career, IU has released five studio albums and twelve EPs, with five albums hitting number one on the Gaon Album Chart. She has the record for the most number-one singles in South Korea with thirty-one hits, making her one of the country's best-selling solo artists in an industry often led by groups. She went to Seoul Yangnam Elementary School, Eonju Middle School, and Dongduk Girls' High School, balancing her education with her growing entertainment career.

Before Fame

Born in Songjeong-dong, Lee Ji-eun faced financial struggles during her childhood, with her family going through tough economic times that sometimes meant she had to live with relatives. Despite these hardships, she dreamed of becoming a singer from a young age. She went to Seoul Yangnam Elementary School and then Eonju Middle School, where she continued to chase her musical dreams.

At fourteen, she auditioned successfully for LOEN Entertainment, becoming one of the youngest trainees there. During her training period, she juggled her studies at Dongduk Girls' High School with intense vocal and performance training.
