Biography
Jens Braage Halvorsen (7 March 1845 – 22 February 1900) was a Norwegian librarian, magazine editor, and literary historian best known for his significant encyclopedia of Norwegian writers. Born in Bergen, Norway, he grew up in that coastal city before moving to the capital, Christiania, in 1866. There, he spent the rest of his life pursuing his scholarly interests.
Halvorsen became part of the literary and intellectual scenes in Christiania during a time of much cultural activity in Norway. From 1880 to 1883, he was the editor of Ny Illustreret Tidende, an illustrated magazine in Norway that offered literature, culture, and commentary. His work as an editor gave him a deep understanding of Norwegian literature, both modern and historical, and helped prepare him for the large-scale encyclopedia project that would define his career.
In 1881, Halvorsen started publishing Norsk forfatterlexikon, an encyclopedia on Norwegian authors and their works. This extensive project required years of research and compilation. He continued working on it throughout his life but didn't live long enough to complete it. After his death in February 1900, the Norwegian historian Halvdan Koht completed the encyclopedia in 1908. It remains a key reference for students of Norwegian literary history.
Besides his main encyclopedia project, Halvorsen also contributed to the first edition of Salmonsens Konversations-Lexikon, a significant Scandinavian encyclopedia of Danish origin, where he was the Norwegian editor. This position highlighted his status as an expert in Norwegian cultural and literary matters. In 1896, he was honored as a Knight of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav for his contributions to Norwegian culture.
Halvorsen passed away in Christiania on 22 February 1900, at fifty-four, leaving behind a significant yet unfinished reference work. His dedication to documenting Norwegian literary history placed him among the notable cultural record-keepers of nineteenth-century Norway, and his encyclopedia remained a valuable resource well into the twentieth century.
Before Fame
Jens Braage Halvorsen was born on March 7, 1845, in Bergen, a major Norwegian city known for its commerce and culture. The city's long history in trade and civic life meant that it had a literate and culturally engaged population.
At 21, in 1866, Halvorsen moved to Christiania, likely seeking better professional and scholarly opportunities in the capital. Christiania was rapidly growing, with increased population and infrastructure, including libraries, publishing houses, and periodicals.
