Biography

Emperor Jimmu, known in Japanese as Jinmu Tennō, is said to be the first emperor of Japan, with his traditional reign dated from 660 BC to 585 BC. According to the ancient texts, Nihon Shoki and Kojiki, he was born in Takachiho and passed away in Kashihara, where he set up his imperial court. These sources describe him as a direct descendant of the sun goddess Amaterasu through her grandson Ninigi, and they also link him to the storm god Susanoo, making him a significant figure in Shinto mythology.

The chronicles tell of Jimmu's military journey starting from Hyūga near the Seto Inland Sea, where he defeated several local leaders before taking control of the Yamato region. This victory made Yamato the heart of imperial power, a status it held for much of Japanese history. His two wives, Himetataraisuzuhime and Ahiratsuhime, likely symbolized political alliances with powerful local clans as he consolidated his rule.

Modern historians view Emperor Jimmu as a legendary figure rather than a historical one, as there is no archaeological or independent evidence of his existence outside these mythological accounts. The Nihon Shoki and Kojiki, compiled in the 8th century AD, were written over a thousand years after Jimmu's supposed reign and serve more as mythical foundations than historical records. These texts were created at a time when the imperial court wanted to legitimize its authority through claims of divine ancestry and ancient tradition.

Even though his historical existence is debated, Jimmu remains an important part of Japanese national identity and imperial ideology. His legendary rise to the throne on February 11, 660 BC, is celebrated every year as National Foundation Day (Kenkoku Kinen no Hi) in Japan. This date was set during the Meiji period to strengthen imperial authority and national unity by linking to Japan's mythological past.

Before Fame

According to mythological accounts, Jimmu was born as Prince Kamu-yamato-iware-biko in Takachiho, now part of Miyazaki Prefecture on Kyushu Island. The stories describe his early life during a time when Japan was divided among many local chieftains and tribes without a central ruler. He reportedly decided to embark on an eastward military expedition due to divine guidance and to set up a center of governance in a more strategically beneficial spot.

Jimmu's supposed era matches Japan's Yayoi period, when wet rice farming, bronze and iron working, and increased social hierarchy were introduced. This time of technological growth and social change created a believable setting for the rise of more centralized power, even if the specific details of Jimmu's life remain myth-based.
