Biography
Johan Christian Claussen Dahl, born on February 24, 1788, in Bergen, Norway, became the most celebrated Norwegian painter of the nineteenth century. Often referred to as J. C. Dahl or I. C. Dahl, he is seen as the founder of the golden age of Norwegian painting and is often called the father of Norwegian landscape painting. He was the first Norwegian artist to gain recognition similar to top European painters of his era and the first to achieve real fame outside of Scandinavia.
Before Fame
Dahl grew up in Bergen, a busy port city with strong connections to European trade and culture. However, the city had limited options for formal artistic training in the late 1700s. Showing early talent as a draftsman, he eventually went to Copenhagen, the main cultural center for Scandinavians, where he enrolled at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. There he gained a solid academic background in drawing, composition, and painting, which gave him the technical skills for his later works.
