John I, Duke of Cleves and Count of Mark (16 February 1419 – 5 September 1481), also known as Jean de Belliqueux (the Warlike), ruled the duchies of Cleves and Mark for over sixty years during the challenging 15th century. Born into the House of La Marck, he inherited his titles as a baby and came of age during a time of significant political change in the Holy Roman Empire and the Low Countries. His long reign was marked by military campaigns, diplomatic efforts, and attempts to strengthen and expand his territories in the Rhineland area.
John's marriage to Elizabeth of Nevers improved his standing among European nobility and provided key political connections. This union linked the House of Cleves to French noble families and increased the duchy's influence in regional politics. Throughout his reign, John showed the military skill that earned him the nickname "the Warlike," participating in various conflicts to defend and expand his domains. His strategic thinking and leadership established Cleves as an important power in the lower Rhine valley.
Being recognized as a Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1451 was a major diplomatic success, marking his acceptance into the most prestigious chivalric order at that time. This honor, given by the Duke of Burgundy, raised John's status among European nobility and acknowledged both his military skills and political significance. His additional knighthood in the Order of the Holy Sepulchre showed his dedication to Christian values and might have indicated involvement in or support for crusading activities.
