Biography

Kevin Jan Magnussen, born on October 5, 1992, in Roskilde, Denmark, is a racing driver who has competed in top-level motorsports like Formula One, the World Endurance Championship, and the IMSA SportsCar Championship. His father, Jan Magnussen, was a well-known racing driver, winning four 24 Hours of Le Mans class titles and racing in Formula One. Kevin has followed in his father's footsteps while making a name for himself in international racing.

Magnussen steadily advanced in the racing world. He started his single-seater career in 2008 after karting and quickly showed promise by winning the Danish Formula Ford Championship in his first year. He moved up the European racing ranks, finishing second in the Formula Renault NEC in 2009 behind António Félix da Costa, and coming in second in the British Formula 3 International Series in 2011, narrowly missing the title to Felipe Nasr. His major breakthrough came in Formula Renault 3.5 in 2013, when he won the championship with DAMS, earning recognition as a potential Formula One driver.

He made a strong Formula One debut with McLaren in 2014, finishing second at the Australian Grand Prix and securing his first podium, the best debut result since Jacques Villeneuve in 1996. Despite this great start, his Formula One career included several team switches and time away from the sport. After being replaced by Fernando Alonso at McLaren in 2015, he worked as a reserve driver before joining Renault in 2016. He then spent four years with the Haas F1 Team from 2017 to 2020, with his best result being ninth in the 2018 World Drivers' Championship standings.

After leaving Formula One following the 2020 season, Magnussen broadened his racing activities by competing in the IMSA SportsCar Championship with Cadillac, winning the Detroit Classic in 2021. He briefly raced in the IndyCar Series with Arrow McLaren and participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In a surprise return to Formula One in 2022, he rejoined Haas, replacing Nikita Mazepin, and quickly proved his lasting speed by earning his first career pole position at the São Paulo Grand Prix. He stayed with Haas through 2024 before moving to factory BMW drives in the World Endurance Championship with WRT and the IMSA SportsCar Championship with RLL.

Before Fame

Growing up in Roskilde as the son of professional racing driver Jan Magnussen, Kevin was introduced to motorsport early on. His father's career in Formula One and sports car racing inspired him and gave him valuable insights into professional racing. Kevin started karting as a kid, building the basic skills that would later lead to his success in single-seater racing.

He moved from karting to junior formulae in 2008 and joined the McLaren Young Driver Programme in 2010, which offered crucial support and development opportunities. This early support from a major Formula One team showed the promise he had in his first seasons of car racing, especially his championship win in Danish Formula Ford and strong performances in European series that caught the attention of scouts and team managers worldwide.
