Biography

Kyrie Andrew Irving, born on March 23, 1992, in Melbourne, Australia, is an American pro basketball player with the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA. His Lakota name, Ȟéla, means 'Little Mountain.' Picked first overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2011 NBA draft, he quickly became known as one of the NBA’s top ball-handlers and scorers. He won the NBA Rookie of the Year award and was named to the NBA All-Rookie Team in 2012.

Irving played college basketball at Duke University before joining the NBA. With the Cavaliers, he became a nine-time All-Star and joined the All-NBA Team three times. His most memorable moment came in the 2016 NBA Finals when he hit a clutch three-pointer that secured the Cavaliers' comeback against the Golden State Warriors, earning Cleveland its first major sports title in over fifty years. He was the MVP of the 2014 NBA All-Star Game. Internationally, Irving won gold with the US team at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics.

After requesting a trade from Cleveland in 2017 following a second Finals trip, Irving moved to the Boston Celtics, where he played for two seasons. In 2019, he joined the Brooklyn Nets as a free agent. His time with the Nets was both highly anticipated and often turbulent. Irving’s decision not to take the COVID-19 vaccine led to him missing most of the 2021–2022 season because of New York City's vaccine mandates. He was traded to the Dallas Mavericks in 2023 and got to his fourth NBA Finals with the team in 2024.

Off the court, Irving is a well-known and sometimes controversial figure. Over the years, he has supported various conspiracy theories, such as the idea that the Earth is flat, a claim he later took back. In 2022, he faced backlash for tweeting a link to the film "Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America," which many saw as antisemitic. In February 2020, Irving was elected as one of seven vice-presidents of the National Basketball Players Association, taking over from Pau Gasol. He has also been involved in advertising, creating, directing, and acting in a series of commercials as the character 'Uncle Drew.'

Before Fame

Kyrie Irving was born in Melbourne, Australia, to Drederick Irving, an American father who had played professional basketball overseas, and an Australian mother. The family moved to the United States during his childhood, and Irving grew up in New Jersey. He attended Montclair Kimberley Academy before transferring to St. Patrick High School in Elizabeth, New Jersey, which had a strong basketball tradition and had produced several NBA players. His exceptional skill and athleticism earned him national attention as one of the top high school recruits in the country.

Irving went to Duke University for the 2010–2011 season, a college with a famous basketball program. A foot injury limited him to just eleven games, but his talent was clear. His performance was enough for the Cleveland Cavaliers to pick him first overall in the 2011 NBA draft, starting a professional career that would make him one of the most talented point guards of his generation.
