Biography

Pope Leo XIV, originally named Robert Francis Prevost, was born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois. He is the 267th Pope of the Catholic Church and the leader of Vatican City. He is the first pope from the United States, the first with U.S. or Peruvian citizenship, the first from the Order of Saint Augustine, and the second pope from the Americas, following Pope Francis. He grew up in Dolton, Illinois. Prevost joined the Order of Saint Augustine in 1977 and became a priest in 1982. He studied theology at Villanova University and the Catholic Theological Union and earned a Doctor of Canon Law degree from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome in 1987.

Before Fame

Robert Prevost grew up in Dolton, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, during a time of change in the American Catholic Church after the Second Vatican Council. He went to St. Augustine Seminary High School, where he started his journey in Augustinian spirituality, and then continued his studies at Villanova University and the Catholic Theological Union. These years influenced his theological views and missionary calling. Choosing to join the Augustinians put him in one of the Church's oldest mendicant orders, which focus on community life and intellectual involvement, shaping his work as a priest and bishop for decades.
