Biography

Manisha Koirala was born on August 16, 1970, in Kathmandu, Nepal, into a prominent political family. She's the daughter of Prakash Koirala and the granddaughter of B. P. Koirala, a former Prime Minister of Nepal. Despite her family's political ties, Koirala chose to pursue a career in acting and became one of the most recognized South Asian actresses of her time. She later studied at New York University and was married to Samrat Dahal.

Koirala appeared in her first Nepali film, Pheri Bhetaula, in 1989 before breaking into Indian cinema with the Hindi film Saudagar in 1991. Her career took off in the mid-1990s with several successful performances. She gained widespread recognition with her role in Mani Ratnam's Bombay (1995) and received praise for her performance in 1942: A Love Story (1994). During this time, she showed her versatility with roles in Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995) and Khamoshi: The Musical (1996), playing the daughter of deaf-mute parents in the latter.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Koirala continued to take on diverse and challenging roles. She played a terrorist in Mani Ratnam's Dil Se.. (1998) and appeared in Ram Gopal Varma's Company (2002). She also acted in Tamil films, including Indian (1996) and Mudhalvan (1999), broadening her appeal across different languages within the Indian film industry. Her choice of unconventional roles made her one of the more adventurous mainstream actresses of her time.

In 2012, Koirala was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer and took a break from acting for treatment. By mid-2014, she had fully recovered and wrote about her experience in her memoir Healed. She returned to the screen with Dear Maya (2017) and played veteran actress Nargis in the biographical film Sanju (2018), a performance that drew a lot of attention. She also appeared in the Netflix film Lust Stories (2018) and took on a major role in the series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar (2024), directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Throughout her career, Koirala has received several awards, including three Filmfare Awards, a Filmfare Awards South honor, and a Filmfare OTT Award. In 2001, the Government of Nepal honored her with the Order of Gorkha Dakshina Bahu for her contributions. She is widely regarded as one of Nepal's most internationally recognized cultural figures, with a career spanning over three decades across different film industries, showing her lasting presence and adaptability as an actress.

Before Fame

Growing up in Kathmandu in the well-known Koirala family, Manisha Koirala was surrounded by public life and national affairs from an early age. Her grandfather, B. P. Despite this environment, Manisha was more interested in performance and the arts rather than politics.

She entered the entertainment world as a teenager, making her debut in a Nepali film in 1989 before moving to the much larger Indian film market. The early 1990s saw big changes in Bollywood, with new directors and storytelling styles gaining popularity, and Koirala made her mark in this changing industry through her work in Saudagar (1991) and her collaborations with filmmakers like Mani Ratnam and Vidhu Vinod Chopra.
