Biography
Marcus Velleius Paterculus was a Roman historian, soldier, and senator who lived during the time of Augustus and Tiberius, from about 19 BC to 31 AD. He was born in Mirabella Eclano in the Campania region and came from a military family, combining military service with writing. His main contribution to Roman literature is his historical work, which covers a wide period from the end of the Trojan War to 30 AD, though what's left mainly focuses on the late Republic and early Empire.
Paterculus participated in various military campaigns under Tiberius, including in Germany and Pannonia between 4 and 12 AD. This gave him firsthand experience in military matters and access to important political figures, which greatly influenced his historical writing. His work offers a practical view on warfare and politics, setting it apart from other historical accounts of the time.
His historical writing, done in the rhetorical style common during the Silver Age of Latin literature, shows both the strengths and weaknesses of Roman historiography under the empire. The text shows a strong bias toward the Julio-Claudian dynasty, especially Augustus and Tiberius, due to the political pressures of writing history under imperial rule. Despite these biases, his work offers valuable insights into the period from Caesar's assassination in 44 BC to the death of Augustus in 14 AD.
Paterculus reached the rank of praetor in 15 AD, which was the peak of his political career. However, his association with Lucius Aelius Sejanus, the powerful head of the Praetorian Guard under Tiberius, led to his downfall. When Sejanus fell from power in 31 AD, Paterculus was caught up in the resulting purges, marking the end of both his life and his historical work.
Before Fame
Paterculus was born into a family with strong military and political ties in Campania near the end of the Republic. His grandfather had served under Pompey and later backed Mark Antony, while his father held military roles under Augustus. This family background gave young Marcus the social standing and connections needed to move up in Roman society.
During the late Republic and early Empire, ambitious young men from provincial families had chances to get ahead through military service and literary work. Paterculus took this route by combining his military service under Tiberius with writing history that praised the new imperial order set up by Augustus.
