Biography

Mel Colm-Cille Gerard Gibson was born on January 3, 1956, in Peekskill, New York, to Irish Catholic parents. When Gibson was twelve, his family moved to Sydney, Australia, where he grew up. This international experience later played a role in his dual American-Australian presence in the entertainment world. He studied acting at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney, showing early promise when he acted alongside Judy Davis in Romeo and Juliet.

Gibson's big break came with his role as Max Rockatansky in George Miller's 1979 film Mad Max. This low-budget Australian film became a hit worldwide, making Gibson an action star. Director Peter Weir saw his potential and cast him in Gallipoli (1981), a World War I drama that won him a Best Actor Award from the Australian Film Institute. During the 1980s, Gibson solidified his career with roles in the Mad Max sequels and by starting his own production company, Icon Entertainment. His fame skyrocketed with the Lethal Weapon series, which began in 1987. In it, he played detective Martin Riggs alongside Danny Glover, creating one of the most popular buddy cop franchises in cinema.

In the 1990s, Gibson moved from acting to filmmaking. In 1995, he produced, directed, and starred in Braveheart, a film about Scottish independence leader William Wallace. It was a huge success, winning Gibson Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Picture, and a Golden Globe for Best Director. This cemented his status as a significant filmmaker. He continued acting in hits like Ransom (1996), The Patriot (2000), What Women Want (2000), and Signs (2002), while honing his directing skills.

Gibson's directing career took a controversial turn with The Passion of the Christ (2004), a film about Jesus' crucifixion. Despite sparking religious and cultural debates, it became one of the top-grossing R-rated films ever. He followed it with Apocalypto (2006), set in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica, highlighting his interest in historical stories. However, his career hit a rough patch due to legal troubles and controversial public remarks that hurt his standing in Hollywood. After a ten-year break from directing, he made a comeback with Hacksaw Ridge (2016), about World War II conscientious objector Desmond Doss. The film won two Academy Awards and marked a successful return for Gibson as a director.

Before Fame

Gibson's journey to fame began when his family moved from New York to Australia at age twelve. His father wanted to avoid the Vietnam War draft and disagreed with American foreign policy. In Sydney, during his teen years, Gibson wasn't really interested in acting. It was his sister who secretly applied for him at the National Institute of Dramatic Art.

In the late 1970s, the Australian film industry had a boom thanks to government support for local movies. This opened doors for young actors like Gibson in uniquely Australian films. He graduated from drama school just as George Miller was looking for an unknown actor for Mad Max. This low-budget film unexpectedly kicked off Gibson's global career and helped shape the action movie scene for years.
