Biography

Michael John Myers was born on May 25, 1963, in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. He went to Stephen Leacock Collegiate Institute and Sir John A. Macdonald Collegiate Institute in his early years. Myers started his entertainment career on Canadian TV before gaining international fame as a cast member on NBC's Saturday Night Live from 1989 to 1995. During his six seasons on the comedy show, he won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series and became a well-known comedic talent.

While on Saturday Night Live, Myers created several popular characters that became cultural hits. His role as Wayne Campbell led to the successful Wayne's World movie series (1992-1993), a standout comedy of the 1990s. Myers wrote, produced, and starred in these films, showcasing his skills beyond acting. The success of Wayne's World made Myers a sought-after movie star and led to bigger creative projects.

Myers found more success with the Austin Powers film series (1997-2002), where he played several roles, including the secret agent Austin Powers and the villain Dr. Evil. The series is known for its humorous take on 1960s spy films and became famous for its catchy lines and characters. Myers won MTV Movie Awards for Best Villain in 1998 and 2000 for playing Dr. Evil, showing his ability to play both the hero and the bad guy in the same movies.

The actor also did voice acting for the Shrek animated films starting in 2001, where he voiced the main character, Shrek. The Shrek series became the second highest-grossing animated film series, introducing Myers to younger fans and showing his talent across different forms of entertainment. He also starred in the 2003 live-action movie adaptation of Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat, which was not as well-received.

Myers moved into directing with the 2013 documentary Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was his first time directing. After a quiet period in the 2010s with smaller roles in Terminal and Bohemian Rhapsody (both 2018), he returned to leading roles by creating and appearing in the 2022 Netflix series The Pentaverate and acting in David O. Russell's Amsterdam. Myers has been married twice, first to Robin Ruzan and later to Kelly Tisdale.

Before Fame

Myers grew up in Scarborough during the 1970s and 1980s when Canadian television was developing its own comic style, distinct from American shows. He got his start on various Canadian TV programs, where he sharpened his skills in sketch comedy and character work. This experience in Canadian entertainment gave Myers a perspective that would later shape his approach to American comedy.

The late 1980s were a prime time for sketch comedy, with Saturday Night Live as the top stage for comedic talent. Myers joined the cast in 1989 during a renewal phase for the show, bringing his Canadian style and character-based humor to American TV. His background in improvisation and creating characters suited him well for the team-oriented, high-energy world of live television sketch comedy.
