Biography
Noam Chomsky, born December 7, 1928, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is an American linguist, political activist, and social critic who changed the study of language and became one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th and 21st centuries. His groundbreaking work in linguistics changed how scholars understand human language acquisition and cognitive development. Chomsky's theory of generative grammar suggested that humans have an innate capacity for language, challenging the behaviorist views that were common in the 1950s.
Chomsky began his academic career at the University of Pennsylvania, studying under Zellig Harris, who introduced him to both structural linguistics and radical politics. He completed his doctorate at Harvard University before joining the faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1955, where he worked for the majority of his career. His 1957 publication 'Syntactic Structures' introduced transformational grammar and made him a leading figure in theoretical linguistics. This work was the foundation for modern syntactic theory and cognitive science.
Outside of linguistics, Chomsky became a notable political commentator and activist during the Vietnam War era. His criticism of American foreign policy, especially in works like 'American Power and the New Mandarins' (1969), established him as a major voice in leftist political discourse. He has consistently supported libertarian socialist principles and has been a vocal critic of corporate media, authoritarianism, and military interventions. His political writings have been translated into many languages and have influenced social movements worldwide.
Chomsky married Carol Chomsky, a linguist and education specialist, in 1949. After her death in 2008, he married Valeria Wasserman Chomsky in 2014. Throughout his career, he has written over 100 books on topics ranging from linguistic theory to political analysis. Though he retired from MIT in 2002, he continued his academic work at the University of Arizona and remained active in political commentary well into his nineties. His career as both a scientist and activist has made him one of the most cited living scholars across multiple fields.
Before Fame
Chomsky grew up in a middle-class Jewish family in Philadelphia. His father was a Hebrew scholar, and his mother came from a family of Hebrew teachers. He went to Oak Lane Day School and then Central High School, where he got interested in radical politics and intellectual activities early on. While studying at the University of Pennsylvania, he almost dropped out because he was frustrated with his studies. But then he met Zellig Harris, who became his mentor and introduced him to structural linguistics and anarchist political philosophy.
In the 1950s, behaviorism was the dominant approach in psychology and linguistics, with B.F. Skinner's theories about language learning through imitation and reinforcement widely accepted. Chomsky's doctoral dissertation at Harvard challenged these views. He argued that language acquisition was too fast and consistent to be explained just by environmental factors. This work set the stage for what became known as the 'Chomskyan Revolution' in linguistics, shifting the field toward understanding language through cognitive and biological perspectives.
