Biography

Olena Volodymyrivna Zelenska (née Kyiashko) was born on February 6, 1978, in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine. She finished her secondary education at Kryvyi Rih Lyceum 95, then went on to study architecture at Kryvyi Rih National University. After her studies, Zelenska shifted to the entertainment industry, working as a television screenwriter and getting involved in comedy productions.

Zelenska met her future husband, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during their university years, and they got married, forming a professional and personal partnership. Before entering public service, she worked a lot in television, contributing to various comedy shows and productions. Her architectural background gave her useful analytical and design skills that later influenced her approach to policy development.

In 2019, Zelenska became the First Lady of Ukraine when her husband became president. She started advocating for education reform, using her varied professional experience to tackle issues in Ukrainian schools and universities. Her efforts focused on updating curricula, improving infrastructure, and expanding access to quality education throughout the country.

After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Zelenska became a key international advocate for Ukraine. She concentrated on supporting military families and tackling the humanitarian crisis affecting Ukrainian civilians. Her work included creating support networks for the families of soldiers, coordinating aid for displaced people, and representing Ukraine's interests globally. Throughout this time, she engaged in many international speaking events and diplomatic meetings to highlight the war's impact on Ukrainian society.

Zelenska's advocacy has gained international recognition, including being named one of BBC's 100 Women in 2022 and listed in Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2023. In 2025, she was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of the White Rose of Finland for her humanitarian and diplomatic efforts. Her career in architecture, screenwriting, and public advocacy has made her an important figure in modern Ukrainian public life.

Before Fame

Growing up in Kryvyi Rih during the late Soviet period and early independence years, Zelenska saw Ukraine transition from communist rule to democratic governance. She studied at a specialized lyceum, which gave her a strong academic foundation, leading her to pursue architectural studies at the local national university. The 1990s and early 2000s in Ukraine brought new opportunities in media and entertainment as the country built its own cultural identity.

Zelenska's move from architecture to screenwriting showed how much Ukraine's media was changing. Television comedy gained popularity as Ukrainian audiences looked for entertainment that resonated with their post-Soviet experiences. Her work in this area placed her in Ukraine's growing entertainment industry, developing alongside the country's move toward democracy and cultural change.
