Biography
Protase Rugambwa was born on May 31, 1960, in Bukoba, Tanzania. He studied at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, gaining the theological and canonical knowledge that informed his later roles in the Catholic Church. After being ordained a priest, he progressed within the Church in Tanzania before taking on wider international duties in the Roman Curia.
In 2009, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Rugambwa as Bishop of Kigoma, a diocese in northwestern Tanzania near Lake Tanganyika. During his time there, he showed strong pastoral leadership in an area facing many development challenges. In 2012, he moved to Rome to work as the adjunct secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, the body that manages Catholic missionary work worldwide. At the same time, he was the president of the Pontifical Mission Societies, which provides global fundraising and support for Catholic missions.
From November 2017 to April 2023, Rugambwa was the secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, making him the second-highest official in an important department of the Holy See. This role put him at the forefront of decisions impacting Catholic communities in Africa, Asia, and other expanding Church regions. He worked closely with bishops and mission areas across several continents.
In April 2023, Rugambwa became the coadjutor archbishop of Tabora, Tanzania, preparing him to eventually lead one of the country's main metropolitan areas. He took full control of the Archdiocese of Tabora in November 2023 after the previous archbishop retired. On September 30, 2023, Pope Francis made him a cardinal at a ceremony in Rome, placing him among the few Tanzanian cardinals in the modern Church.
As the metropolitan archbishop of Tabora, Rugambwa leads a diocese with a wide geographic and demographic range in central Tanzania. His mix of pastoral work in Africa and years of service in Rome makes him an important figure in both the African Church and the global Catholic community. He continues in this role and is involved in the activities of the College of Cardinals.

Protase Rugambwa was born and raised in Bukoba, a town next to Lake Victoria in the Kagera Region of Tanzania. The area has long been a hub for Catholic missionary activity, with the White Fathers establishing a strong church presence in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Growing up in this faith-centered community likely influenced his early religious development.
