Biography
Park Jae-sang, known as Psy, is a South Korean rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer born on December 31, 1977, in Gangnam District, Seoul. He gained worldwide fame in 2012 with his viral hit "Gangnam Style," which changed the global music scene and brought K-pop into the Western mainstream. The song's music video was the first on YouTube to hit one billion views and was the most-viewed video from November 2012 to July 2017.
Psy's music career started in 2001 with his debut album "Psy from the Psycho World!" It took him eleven years to achieve international success. His unique style mixes humor, lively dance moves, and catchy tunes, often offering social commentary on South Korean culture and lifestyle. After "Gangnam Style," he released "Gentleman" in 2013, which set a record for YouTube views in the first 24 hours and made it to the top 10 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
Psy studied in the United States, attending Boston University and later Berklee College of Music, where he honed his musical talents and expanded his artistic outlook. This education helped him connect with audiences both at home and worldwide. He has received many awards, including YouTube Play Buttons (Silver, Gold, and Diamond), QQ Music Awards, the NRJ Music Award for International Song of the Year in 2013, an American Music Award, a World Music Award, and 10 MAMA Awards.
In addition to performing, Psy has made a name for himself as an entrepreneur in entertainment, founding P Nation, a talent agency managing various artists. The South Korean government has honored him for his cultural contributions with the Okgwan (4th Class) Order of Cultural Merit. His career spans acting, choreography, dancing, TV production, and music production, making him one of South Korea's most versatile entertainment figures.
Before Fame
Growing up in Gangnam District during the 1980s and 1990s, Psy saw South Korea's fast economic growth and the rise of its wealthy culture up close. His childhood in this rich Seoul area later inspired his most famous work. Even though his family wanted him to go into business, Psy felt drawn to music and performing from a young age.
He chose to study at Boston University and then moved to Berklee College of Music, making a big commitment to his artistic growth. Back then, not many Korean artists were looking for music education abroad. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the Korean Wave (Hallyu) began, and Psy started his music career when South Korean pop culture was just starting to be noticed in the region, though international fame was still over a decade away.
