Biography
Ralph Nathaniel Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes was born on December 22, 1962, in Ipswich, Suffolk, England. He went to several schools as a young student, including Bishop Wordsworth's Church of England Grammar School, Newtown School in Waterford, Ireland, and St Kieran's College. He then studied art at the Chelsea College of Art and Design before training as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he graduated in 1985. He started his career in classical theater, focusing on Shakespeare, and earned a solid reputation at the Royal National Theatre and later with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Fiennes started his film career by playing Heathcliff in the 1992 adaptation of Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights. He gained fame in movies the next year when he played the villainous Nazi commandant Amon Göth in Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List (1993). This role earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and won him the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. He got a second Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his role in Anthony Minghella's The English Patient (1996), which also won him the European Film Award for Best Actor in 1999.
In 1995, Fiennes appeared on Broadway for the first time in a well-received production of Hamlet, playing the main role. This performance won him the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play and a Theatre World Award, strengthening his presence both in American theater and in films worldwide. He returned to Broadway in 2006, earning a Tony nomination for his role as a traveling faith healer in Brian Friel's Faith Healer. The James Joyce Awards have also recognized him for his contributions to the arts.
Fiennes became widely recognized for playing the villain Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter film series, appearing in six films from 2005 to 2011. He further expanded his role in franchises by joining the James Bond series in 2012's Skyfall as Gareth Mallory, continuing in this role through No Time to Die (2021), and eventually becoming M. In addition to acting, Fiennes has directed, writing and directing Coriolanus (2011), a modern take on the Shakespeare play where he also starred, and The Invisible Woman (2013). He received a third Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his role in Edward Berger's Conclave (2024), showing his lasting impact in film. His marriage to actress Alex Kingston was a notable part of his personal life, despite its end. In 2018, he received the European Film Academy Achievement in World Cinema Award for his work in film.
Before Fame
Ralph Fiennes grew up in a family with strong artistic interests. His father, Mark Fiennes, was a farmer and photographer, and his mother, Jennifer Lash, was a novelist and painter. The family lived in Ireland at times, which explains why he attended Irish schools like Newtown School in Waterford and St Kieran's College. Moving around the British Isles from a young age gave Fiennes the chance to experience various cultural settings.
After a brief stint at the Chelsea College of Art and Design, Fiennes decided to focus on acting and got into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, a top drama school in the UK. After graduating in 1985, he worked consistently in theater, honing his skills through Shakespeare at the Royal National Theatre and later with the Royal Shakespeare Company. His reputation in theater naturally grew from this classical background, paving the way for his move into film in the early 1990s.
