Biography

Rami Said Malek was born on May 12, 1981, in Torrance, California, to Egyptian Coptic immigrant parents. He grew up in Los Angeles and went to Notre Dame High School. He then studied theater at the University of Evansville in Indiana. After graduating, he moved to New York City for stage work before starting a screen career.

Malek started his career with supporting roles in film and TV in the mid-2000s. He was on the Fox sitcom The War at Home from 2005 to 2007 and had a notable role in the HBO miniseries The Pacific in 2010. He also appeared in the Night at the Museum films from 2006 to 2014 as the Egyptian pharaoh Ahkmenrah, which helped him reach a wider audience.

His big break came when he was cast as Elliott Alderson in the USA Network drama series Mr. Robot, which premiered in 2015. The show was praised for its technical and psychological aspects, and Malek's performance won him the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2016, as well as the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series. He continued in the role until the series ended in 2019.

Malek gained international fame for playing Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of the rock band Queen, in the biographical film Bohemian Rhapsody, released in 2018. His performance was highly praised, and he won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2019, becoming the first actor of Egyptian heritage to win this award. That same year, he also won the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama, the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role, and the Satellite Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture.

He played David Hill in Christopher Nolan's acclaimed biographical film Oppenheimer in 2023.
