Biography
Sir Nigel John Dermot 'Sam' Neill was born on 14 September 1947 in Omagh, Northern Ireland, to an English mother and a New Zealand father. In 1954, when he was seven, his family moved to Christchurch, New Zealand. Neill went to school at Medbury School and Christ's College in Christchurch, and later studied at the University of Canterbury and Victoria University of Wellington. His diverse background and strong education helped him play a variety of roles in films around the world.
Neill's acting career took off in the late 1970s with his breakthrough role in the New Zealand film Sleeping Dogs (1977). This success led to major roles in well-known films like My Brilliant Career (1979) and Omen III: The Final Conflict (1981). During the 1980s and early 1990s, he became a versatile actor in both dramatic and thriller films, featuring in movies such as Possession (1981), Evil Angels (1988), Dead Calm (1989), and The Hunt for Red October (1990). His role in Evil Angels, also known as A Cry in the Dark, won him the AACTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 1989.
A major highlight of Neill's career was playing paleobotanist Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park (1993). This role made him internationally famous and closely linked with his public image. He played the character again in Jurassic Park III (2001) and returned to the series nearly 20 years later in Jurassic World Dominion (2022). Between and after his Jurassic Park roles, Neill continued to build a strong film career with movies like The Piano (1993), In the Mouth of Madness (1994), and Event Horizon (1997).
Outside of movies, Neill has been active on television, taking on both guest and starring roles in various shows. His TV work includes the historical drama Reilly, Ace of Spies (1983), the fantasy miniseries Merlin (1998), and the crime drama Peaky Blinders (2013-2014), where he played Major Chester Campbell. He has also done voice work for animated series like The Simpsons and Rick and Morty. Apart from acting, Neill enjoys winemaking and runs his own vineyard in New Zealand. His contributions to entertainment and culture have been recognized through numerous awards, including his appointment as Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1991, Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2007, and Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2022.
Before Fame
Neill started his journey into acting during his university years in New Zealand, where he began with English literature. His passion for acting grew through participating in university theater and local drama groups. The New Zealand film industry was on the rise in the 1970s, with government support boosting local film projects and giving a platform to new talent.
He had his big break when he landed a role in Sleeping Dogs, one of the first major New Zealand films to gain international recognition.
