Biography

Shallum was the fifteenth king of the ancient Kingdom of Israel, ruling for about a month in 752 BCE during a time of severe political instability. He was the son of Jabesh and took the throne by force, assassinating his predecessor Zechariah, the son of Jeroboam II. This marked the end of the dynasty of Jehu, which had ruled Israel for nearly a hundred years. Shallum's reign was one of the shortest in the history of the northern kingdom, lasting only about thirty days before he himself was killed in a similar act of political violence.

Zechariah's assassination happened in Ibleam, and Shallum then took control of the capital, Samaria. However, his hold on power was very weak. The Kingdom of Israel was going through a period of fast political decline, with multiple claimants to the throne and widespread civil unrest. The economic prosperity seen during Jeroboam II's reign had disappeared, replaced by social turmoil and pressure from the growing Assyrian Empire under Tiglath-Pileser III.

Shallum's short rule ended when Menahem, son of Gadi, led a coup against him. Menahem was from Tirzah, a former capital of Israel, and managed to capture Samaria, killing Shallum in the process. This cycle of assassination reflected the greater instability that troubled the northern kingdom in its last years. The rapid turnover of rulers weakened Israel’s ability to deal with external threats and internal problems.

Historical records of Shallum’s reign are limited, mainly to the biblical account in 2 Kings 15. No significant policies or military actions are noted from his short rule, which makes sense given the brief time he was in power. His reign took place in the mid-8th century BCE, when the Kingdom of Israel was beginning its final decline before being conquered by Assyria in 722 BCE. The political chaos shown by rulers like Shallum played a big role in the northern kingdom's failure to stay independent against emerging empires.

Before Fame

Not much is known about Shallum's early life or background before he took over the throne. As Jabesh's son, he probably came from a family with some political or military influence, though he wasn't from the royal line. The name Jabesh might link him to Jabesh-Gilead, a town east of the Jordan River, hinting at possible Transjordanian origins.

Shallum came into the picture during a time when the Kingdom of Israel was facing significant internal conflict after Jeroboam II died around 753 BCE. The long and prosperous reign of Jeroboam had hidden underlying social tensions and political rivalries. When Zechariah took over from his father Jeroboam II, these tensions turned into open conflict, giving ambitious people like Shallum the chance to challenge the existing dynasty through force.
