Biography
Valerii Zaluzhnyi was born in 1973 in Ukraine when it was still part of the Soviet Union. He chose a military path, studying at several military schools and moving up the ranks within the Ukrainian Armed Forces after Ukraine gained independence in 1991. His early career matched Ukraine's efforts to build and upgrade its defense as a new nation.
In July 2021, President Volodymyr Zelensky made Zaluzhnyi the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, putting him at the top of the military. This happened during high tensions with Russia and ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine since 2014. With this role, Zaluzhnyi was in charge of handling Ukraine's military readiness and defense plans.
When Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Zaluzhnyi was at the forefront of one of Europe's biggest military conflicts since World War II. Under his leadership, Ukrainian forces surprisingly held their ground against the much larger Russian army. His decisions and coordination in defense helped Ukraine push back the initial attacks on Kyiv and other important cities.
