Strategic Narrative Overview
From June 10 to 12, 1944, the misplaced American paratroopers defended Graignes against repeated assaults by the 17th SS Panzergrenadier Division Götz von Berlichingen. The small American force held the town for two days, inflicting delays on the German unit's planned counterattack toward Carentan. Ultimately overwhelmed by superior German forces, the defenders were forced to withdraw or were captured, and the Germans retook the village.
01 / The Origins
During Operation Overlord in June 1944, American paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division were dropped into Normandy as part of the Allied invasion of occupied France. Some units landed off course near the village of Graignes, where they organized a defensive perimeter. The strategic importance of the position lay in its potential to delay German SS forces from reinforcing or counterattacking Allied positions around Carentan.
03 / The Outcome
After recapturing Graignes, German troops massacred 44 French civilians and executed a number of American prisoners of war taken from a captured aid station, then set the town ablaze. The delay imposed on the 17th SS Panzergrenadier Division contributed to the German counterattack at Carentan being repulsed at the Battle of Bloody Gulch on June 13, 1944, helping secure the Allied beachhead.
