Strategic Narrative Overview
The KPA 6th Division launched a strong assault on Haman beginning August 31, 1950. The US 24th Infantry Regiment, stretched thinly along a defensive ridge, struggled to repel the attack and performed poorly under pressure. Over the course of a weeklong battle, additional US reinforcements were committed to stabilize the line and mount a sustained defense against the KPA advance.
01 / The Origins
In the summer of 1950, North Korean forces invaded South Korea, pushing UN and ROK troops into a shrinking defensive perimeter around the port of Pusan. As part of the broader Battle of Masan, the US 24th Infantry Regiment was deployed along a ridge west of Haman to defend the town and the approaches to Masan, a critical supply and logistics hub for the UN defensive effort.
03 / The Outcome
By September 19, 1950, UN forces successfully repelled the KPA assault on Haman, securing the town and maintaining the integrity of the Pusan Perimeter in that sector. The battle contributed to the broader UN defensive success at the Pusan Perimeter, which held until the Inchon landings allowed UN forces to go on the offensive and eventually reverse North Korean gains.
