Strategic Narrative Overview
After stopping the Italian invasion, Greek forces launched a counter-offensive in early November 1940. The assault on Korçë represented the final stage of Greek penetration in the Morava–Ivan heights sector. The Italian 9th Army was entrenched around the town and bombarded advancing Greek troops. Despite heavy resistance, Greek forces broke through the Italian defensive line after two days of fierce combat, capturing the town. The poorly motorized Greeks could not pursue the retreating remnants of the 9th Army.
01 / The Origins
On 28 October 1940, Italy launched an invasion of Greece from occupied Albania, expecting a swift victory. Greek forces successfully repelled the initial assault, halting Italian advances and shifting the momentum. Korçë, a major town in southern Albania, served as the primary base for Italian air operations and a key logistical hub, making it a critical objective once Greece transitioned from defense to a counter-offensive in early November 1940.
03 / The Outcome
Korçë fell to Greek forces in November 1940, becoming one of the first Axis-controlled towns lost during the Second World War. The Italian 9th Army retreated largely intact due to limited Greek motorization. The Greek hold on the town proved temporary; German and Italian forces recaptured it in April 1941 during the Axis invasion of Greece. Korçë did not revert to full Albanian control until 1944.
